The African American Leadership Society (AALS) of United Way of Anderson County presents the 3rd Annual Black History Black Tie Dinner to be held on February 8, 2019. The dinner has become the signature annual event for the AALS and the most anticipated black tie event of the year for Anderson County.
The keynote speaker for this great event will be Mrs. Felicia Sanders, survivor of the Mother Emanuel Massacre in Charleston, SC. Sanders, whose son Tywanza and aunt Susie Jackson were among the nine killed during Bible study at the Calhoun Street AME church, survived the massacre and forgave the 21-year-old white supremacist who killed her loved ones at an emotional hearing just days later. Sanders also protected her granddaughter during the shooting.
Once again, we will recognize leadership in the African American community as we present the following awards.
- The Emerging Leader Community Award will be presented to an individual under the age of 35, who exhibits exemplary professional accomplishments and commitment to service the community.
- The Community Leader Award recognizes an individual who has made significant contributions to the community through their involvement in volunteer activities and /or their special achievement in specific areas of community and professional life. This individual exemplifies United Way’s core mission of improving our community by providing leadership in identifying needs, securing & leveraging resources and driving action.
- The Legacy Award recognizes a pioneer in the community, who through the years, has fought, worked, advocated, and produced change through their community service, their voice and their dedication.
Funds raised from this event will go to the United Way of Anderson County Weekend Snackpack program to feed hungry children on the weekend. Monday through Friday during the school year, these students get their breakfast and lunch at school, and may not see another meal until Monday morning. The Weekend Snackpack Program serves elementary-aged children in Anderson County. Currently, 1000 meals are provided each weekend and over 35,000 meals are provided each school year. Many more children are in need of this service.
