United Way Kicks Off Campaign With a Day of Action

Anderson, SC – United Way of Anderson County kicked off its annual campaign on Saturday, August 20th with a Day of Action. Over 700 volunteers including over 500 students from Anderson University, over 30 faculty and students from Tri-County Technical College and members of AmeriCorps joined together to perform various hands-on community service projects. The students helped do everything from spread mulch and landscaping at Anderson Interfaith Ministries, to painting doors at Foothills Alliance to painting bathroom at Safe Harbor Women’s Shelter. In all, 40 agencies and organizations around the county benefited from the massive operation.

“It was a fabulous day” stated Carol Burdette, CPO of United Way of Anderson County. “My group worked at the Clemson Little Theater in Pendleton. We got everything done on our list of things to do. It was great!”

The event was organized by Carol Loyd, Volunteer Coordinator of United Way of Anderson County. “It was a great day” she said. “The volunteers were wonderful and the students were awesome! It’s great to see so many young people working so hard; most for a community that they just arrived in less than a week ago.”

“For several years, the global theme of United Way Worldwide has been LIVE UNITED”, stated Lynn Scott, Director of Marketing for United Way. “LIVE UNITED is not just a statement, it is a command. It is a verb. It denotes action. Therefore, the Day of Action signifies our community uniting together to make Anderson County a better place to live for everyone.”

The day ended with all of the volunteers uniting at the Athletic Complex of Anderson University for pizza and fellowship.

The Day of Action signifies the beginning of the United Way of Anderson County’s annual fundraising campaign. “Looking at the big picture and making our vision a reality is a big, bold endeavor, but worth every hour of our time and a measure of our dedication. It is a shared purpose we can all rally around”, stated Leigh Snow, Chair of the 2011-12 campaign. “Charity may fill a need, but your donations to United Way of Anderson County’s Community Impact fund target the cause of the needs…and by getting to the root cause of the problem, we can achieve lasting change”.
